Crowdfunding in Nepal

Crowdfunding in Nepal

crowdfunding_v2-01It’s awesome to see bands, filmmakers and others using platforms like Kickstarter and IndieGoGo these days in Nepal. Crowdfunding has been all the rage for a while, but this has been the first time I am seeing it here, and it’s great. From Deepak Rauniyar’s ‘Highway’ on Kickstarter (Lex Limbu blogs about it here) to FunkyFresh, The Old Man and the Tea, and Make Me Play on IndieGoGO, there’s more people funding their projects by asking  friends, fans, and random people on the web to make their idea happen. Do check out all the project mentioned above and support any way you can…We need more of that in Nepal.

Learn to do it yourself

final.logo.paypalWe, at Sattya Media Arts Collective, are also planning a one day session called ‘Funding Your Idea’ sometime in December, where we’re going to talk about crowdfunding, grant writing, fundraising, and other creative ways to make your ideas happen. So stay tuned for that on our website and Facebook group.

King 10 & Space Cake Break

The latest crowdfunding project out of Kathmandu that you should be checking out is Space Cake Break- “the bake of celestial enthusiasm and material innuendos, inspired by the pop culture of sound-scapes and the theatrical decadence of a humanity driven to self destruct”; the closest definition of what the band believes to be.”

This is the first band to be coming out with the promising new local indie music label, King10 Records, which is trying to create opportunity for upcoming musicians in a city where so many great musicians never get a chance to share and develop their talent due to lack of funding and support.

“We are looking at nothing more than to INSPIRE local artists on continuing what they do best. Even to be able to fund just as basic as production costs is a major motivation for bands as such to be in the scene.”

So here is your chance, Kathmandu. Support your local scene. Do it here.

Space Cake Break- This Box

Live at the House of Music, Kathmandu on Sept. 2, 2011.

This Thing Called Happiness (Khusee Bhaneko)

“Tapaile khusee bhaneko ke ho? Ani kun kurale khusee banauncha?”

“What is happiness to you? What things make you happy?”

I walked over a month though Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Lamjung, Manang, Mustang, and Myagdi districts of Nepal, asking people I met along the way this question.

I chose this question because I myself had no idea to the answer. What really matters?

Nepal is a good place for walking since there are endless trails through the mountains. But these trails are not empty. They pass through villages. They are always in use. They are a good place for starting conversations.

“This Thing Called Happiness” is a collection of thoughts on happiness from the people of these regions. It is different from most documentaries made in Nepal. It’s not about politics, poverty, or progress. It is a simple look into contemporary Nepal and the people who live in it, yet its theme is universal.

I am fundraising for completing it on Kickstarter. Please support me if you can. Thanks!

Manohara is an area near the airport that is considered by the government to be an illegal settlement. Despite it illegal nature, the settlement is quite well developed and not impermanent. These photos are from a painting a community center that is being set up there.
